So What!!!!

Posted on February 28, 2008

Mats Sundin is so loyal to the Maple Leaf cause that he refused to waive his no trade clause, allowing Toronto to trade him to a contender. He wants to help the team make the playoffs. And what if they do? They’ll probably get blown out in the first round, and his vacation will be a week shorter than it usually is.    And what will that achieve for the franchise? Absolutely nothing!! If he really cared about the team and its fans, also known as Leaf Blowers, Sundin would have accepted a trade, with the knowledge that he could return next season, with a new and better cast of characters. He may have even been able to arrange a deal to continue with his beloved franchise after his retirement, as a European scout, or good will ambassador. But as it stands, this loyal true blue Leaf Alumnus won’t even say what his plans are for next season. He may even retire, and leave them with nothing to show for his efforts.    There is no questioning Sundins’ contributions to the Leafs during his stay in Toronto, but his attitude at this time of his career leaves a lot to be desired from fans who will be here long after he’s spending his millions at his Swedish retreat.    And as far as Darcy Tucker, Pavel Kubina and Bryan Mcabe are concerned. The solution to that problem is simple. Buy them out. The orgnaization can afford it. It would go a long way to eliminate the country club atmosphere in the dressing room. And the rebuilding process can begin,,,yet again.

Andy Pettitte

Posted on February 19, 2008

Don’t know if you caught Andy Pettitte’s media conference yesterday from Florida, but in a way it was refreshing to watch someone tell the truth for a change. Pettitte, was calm and cool when he faced a throng of media representatives at the Yankees training facility in Florida. He seemed to be comfortable in his skin while discussing his use of human growth hormone, supplied by his father. He admitted what he did was wrong, but said he wasn’t “cheating” to get an upper hand on anyone else in major league baseball. He was in a desparate state after signing a big contract and having elbow problems and wanted to get healthy as quickly as possible.

I’m not condoning what he did by any stretch, but to watch him admit his mistake in such a convincing manner turned him into a much more compassionate human being. He even went so far as to say the Roger Clemens was still a “brother” and friend. With friends like Clemens, who needs enemies.

Pettitte went a long way to save his reputation on Monday, to bad his former teamate and “brother” can’t face reality and admit his mistakes.

Who to Believe?

Posted on February 13, 2008

Yeah I watched the congressional hearings in Washington on Wednesday. I was impressed by the chairman Henry Waxman and the way he handled the proceedings. I was not impressed by either Roger Clemens or Brian Mcnamee. On one hand, I find it hard to believe that Mcnamee would indict Chuck Knoblach and Andy Pettite for their use of human growth hormone, and have them verify his charges, only to have Clemens deny, deny, deny…It’s almost as if Clemens was caught cheating on his wife, by his wife, red handed, but denied, denied denied. By the way, I wouldn’t want to get caught by my wife for cheating after she’s been taking h-g-h, I think any disagreement would be very one sided…And why would Mcnamee cast a shadow over Clemens stellar career? Why would he turn on an employer, and a so called friend? A friend who employed him for so many years and helped him reach the heights of success he has reached, legally or not? Don’t forget, even after Mcnamee was fired by the Yankees because of the alleged rape incident, Clemens kept him on as his trainer, and took him to Toronto.

It’s also hard to understand why Clemens would condemn Mcnamee, while forgiving Andy Pettite for basically saying the same thing… Deny, deny, deny until they start to believe you or get sick of listening.

There was no winner in todays display on capital hill in Washington. In fact, baseball took another direct hit, and lost more credibility. We may never know who the liar is of the two…but as far as  I’m concern, they both belong in the same hole together.

It’s February Already???

Posted on February 5, 2008

Where is the time flying??? Can’t we slow things down just a little bit. Before you know it summer will be over, and we’ll have to listen to more lame promises from the Leafs front office about how the team will be competitive, and challenge for the Stanley Cup. Yeah, and pigs will fly from my butt!!!! Interesting headline in a Toronto peper this week saying Bryan Mcabe’s return will be too late for Toronto to make a playoff run. They didn’t win when he was in the lineup scoring on his own net, and they haven’t won with him on the sidelines with a broken wrist. Why do they think anything will change when he gets back on the ice?

For the longest time, watching the Super Bowl on Sunday, I thought the Giants would be one of teh few teams that should have won a game they had dominated from the opening kickoff. But Eli Manning came through, making Plaxico Burress look like a fortune telller. Great game, wonderful ending, and as far as I’m Concerned, Tom Petty did not break any hearts. He was at his usual best.

Started teaching at the College of Sports Media this week. Have a great group of students, of all ages. They’re eager, and engaged and we can’t ask for more than that. They have a great thirst to learn, and we’re hoping it translates into success for them down the road.
